It is well documented that the area, including the Settlers’ Ghost Golf Club site on Horseshoe Valley Road, was an important Huron Indian settlement prior to Champlain's arrival in Simcoe County. The Huron Indians are, therefore, considered to be the first settlers on this site. The second group was the immigrants from the British Isles whose descendents continue to inhabit the area. The golf club is the third settler to the property. “Ghost” refers to the first two groups of inhabitants who may be gone from this land but are not forgotten. The golf course has been built and will be maintained to reflect the history of this property and the surrounding area. For example, the bunker sand has been chosen for both its playability, and for its reddish – brown colour that blends so well with the agricultural background of Settlers’ Ghost Golf Club.

Less than a kilometre off Highway 11, this club offers the cottage golfer a nice, easy warm-up round on the way up to one of Muskoka’s new monster courses. The Frontier nine is the flattest, but also the longest and most challenging, particularly the par threes: the 237-yard fifth, which goes over and around several well-placed trees; and the 191-yard eighth to a small green surrounded by dense forest. The Klondike is much hillier, with quite a few blind shots—particularly your second into the short 441-yard, par five fourth; and the tee shot on the 189-yard, par three seventh, with its tiny green in a bowl (aim for the birdhouse). The sixth hole on the Klondike offers what is arguably the province’s best use of a tree in the centre of a fairway: the lone oak that stands on the top of the hill is surprisingly dramatic against a clear blue sky, not to mention a useful target for the blind tee shot. The shortest of the three, the Rangeland is the nine of choice for the senior set. Steer clear of it if you’re short on time, though it does offer a handful of challenging holes.
